This challening project consisted of a 7-story structural steel expansion and two 12-story structural steel seismic bays to reinforce the existing hospital. The addition was built above the hospital’s only entrance to its loading dock and ambulance garage, which had to remain in operation during the project. This scenario was further complicated by the fact that the existing building is situated within the very congested Washington University Medical Center and totally fills its site. In essence, the East Expansion had to be built within the air-rights over the loading dock access.

Adjacent buildings and tunnels required the project to be constructed completely in three structural sections from South to North, all the while keeping the drive lane on the north open to the loading dock. All materials to the site had to be coordinated as “just in time” due to the minimal laydown area.
