18,500As part of a major renovation to Hard Rock Stadium, originally known as Joe Robbie Stadium, Hillsdale Fabricators fabricated and erected more than 18,500 tons of structural steel for a state-of-the-art open-air canopy. The 626,000-square-foot, long-span, cable-supported roof provides shade and protection from inclement weather for nearly 65,000 fans while allowing ample natural sunlight, and it is designed to withstand Category 4 hurricane winds as a structure independent from the existing stadium.
The canopy is supported by eight concrete super-columns working with a structural cable system, with four steel masts rising between column pairs and spires reaching 357 feet. Hillsdale Fabricators also supported installation through truss preassembly and multiple four-crane picks, including assemblies measuring 440 feet in length and weighing 700 tons.
