Delivering refinery modules by river to support major expansion
Hillsdale Fabricators provided 28 preassembled modules supporting work at the Wood River Refinery in Roxana and Hartford, Illinois, located across the river from downtown St. Louis. The modules were part of a major refinery expansion that included construction of a new four-drum, 65,000-barrel-per-day coker to increase capacity to handle bitumen from the Alberta oil sands.
Hillsdale Fabricators staged and preassembled the modules at its Humboldt Shipping Facility before loading them for transport to the jobsite. Seventeen units shipped by barge and 11 units were trucked, with river transport requiring careful coordination because some modules reached heights of 55 feet while on barges. Maintaining bridge clearances required constant monitoring of river elevations during transit
